Conditions
Non EU citizens may acquire property in Malta after they obtain a permit known as an AIP permit. This permit will be granted subject to the following conditions and will normally be issued within five weeks. Foreign nationals who are NOT citizens of a European Member State are allowed to own only one property, with the exception of property sited in a "Specially Designated Area" where one can own an unlimited number of units. The Special Designated areas are Portomaso, Tigne Point, Cottonera Waterfront and Chambray. The property purchased may not be converted into more than one dwelling. The property is to be used solely as a residence for the owner or for his immediate family and guests may be accommodated in the property when the owner or a member of his family is in residence. Should the applicant obtain the relative permit to rent the property this condition may be altered. The minimum value for purchasing a flat, apartment or maisonette is €81,528 and for a house or a villa the minimum value is €140,000

Minimum Value
There is no upper limit on the value you can spend to acquire a property, however there are some restrictions on the minimum values. If you are thinking of purchasing a flat, apartment or maisonette the minimum value is €81,528 and for a house or a villa the minimum value is €140,000. The minimum value for renting a property is €3261 per annum.
